Obituary for Thomas J. Cummings

Thomas John Cummings, of Bordentown, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on November 28, 2022. He was 91 years old.

Thomas was the first baby born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on January first of 1931, and lived for much of his childhood in Saint Clair. His parents were Thomas Walter and Julia Hughes Cummings. He is also predeceased by his older sister AnneMarie and survived by his younger brother Joe.

Thomas, or Tom as he was known to friends and family, was married for nearly 49 years, to his beloved wife Mercedes, who died in 2007.

They are survived by their six children, Mary, John, Anne, Thomas, Paul and David, along with 19 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Tom was a military veteran, drafted in 1952. He took basic training at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, and then attended officer’s candidate school, at Fort Benning, Georgia where he was commissioned a second lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

He graduated from Penn State University with a BA in Labor Relations and obtained his master’s in business administration from Xavier University.

He was a lifelong Catholic, and devoted member of Mary Mother of the Church in Bordentown, where he served in various capacities.

He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Bordentown Council 570.

Tom was a man of generosity, empathy, humor and wit, and will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Wednesday December 7, 2022 11:00am at Mary Mother of the Church Parish 45 Crosswicks St. Bordentown NJ 08505. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday evening from 6:00 ~ 8:00pm at the Bordentown Home for funerals 40 Crosswicks St. Bordentown, NJ 08505. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery Jessup, PA.
