Obituary

Sgt. Maj. Edward C. Merten, Sr, 83, of Columbus, NJ passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021 at his home.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Edward joined the United States Marine Corps right out of high school. He proudly served his country, traveling overseas and throughout the U.S. from coast to coast for his 28-year career, retiring at the rank of Sergeant Major from U.S. Marine Corps Heavy Helicopter Squadron HMH772. Edward owned and operated Merten-Leahy-Burke Florist for 31 years before retiring. He was a third generation florist in the Merten family.

Edward is predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol after 60 years of marriage. He is survived by their children, Edward Cort, and husband Brian Walsh, Robert and wife, Suzanne, grandchildren, Lyndsey Caro and husband Len, Ryan Merten and wife Brittney, Kelly Merten and boyfriend Shane Hoiles and great grandchild Lia Maria Caro. Edward also leaves behind Janet Tymash, who was a blessing to him and his family. He loved her dearly and she will forever be a part of the Merten family. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Heather Nieto and Brendan Walsh and step-great-children Selena and Tyler Nieto and Jameson Walsh.
Edward was a member of the Burlington County Marine Corps League, The American Legion and the Bordentown Elks Lodge.

Memorial contributions may be made to USMC Toys for Tots, which held a special place in Ed’s heart, who believed no child should go without gifts on Christmas.

Due to the Covid 19 restrictions, 100 people at a time will be allowed in the funeral. Masks must be worn, and social distancing must be practiced when possible. We will be live streaming Edward’s Life Celebration. Please click this link: https://my.gather.app/remember/sgt-maj-edward-c-merten-sr
