Obituary for Peter H. Appelmann Sr.

Peter H. Appelmann, Sr., 74, died peacefully and with his children by his side on Saturday April 2, 2022 after a years-long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born in Queens, NY, Pete lived in New Jersey for the majority of his life.

He was a Vietnam Veteran who served honorably as a Sergeant and aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Airforce from December 1965 to June 1968. Upon returning home, Pete worked at Hoffman-La Roche until ultimately making a career in hospital and facilities management, most notably at Holy Name Medical Center (Teaneck) as Director of Facilities until his retirement in 2016.

Pete was a licensed electrician and a jack-of-all-trades who was always willing to put on a uniform alongside his employees. Additionally, he was a member of the Healthcare Facilities Management Society of New Jersey for which he served as President in 2001. Pete was well-respected and valued hard work and humor in all aspects of life.

Son of the late Rudolf and Emelia Appelmann, Peter is survived by his beloved children, Peter, Jr. (Emmalyn) and Jennifer L. Appelmann; his cherished grandson, Thomas Steven; his brother and sister-in-law, Rudolf and Mary Lou Appelmann; and many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

If not tinkering in his garage, you could find Pete on the golf course or on his boat. He was never without a camera around his neck, and he was always the first to crack a joke but also teach a lesson. Pete dedicated time to the Knights of Columbus, and he was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan, but his number one team was his family. Pete was a father first and always relished opportunities with Pete, Jr. and Jen to coach a team, go to Disney World, teach a skill, or enjoy a game of golf. He held the proud title of Grampy for the last three years, and shared airplanes, toy cars, and donuts as often as he could with "his Tommy."
