Obituary for Edward J. Downs Sr.

Edward J. Downs Sr. passed away on Tuesday Jan 11, 2022. Born in Camden NJ, Ed was a longtime resident of the Bordentown, Roebling/Florence communities.

Ed was employed by city of Bordentown for many years, first with the water and sewerage department for 35 years and then later on as a crossing guard.

Ed spent most of his life in serving his community, especially as a volunteer fireman. He was a past member of the Delaware Fire Company, Consolidated Fire Company and the Florence Township Fire Department 401, serving on the Fire Police and as a firefighter. He served as Past Recording Secretary for the Burlington County Firefighters Association and for the Burlington County New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association.

Ed never served in the military, but he devoted his life helping veterans, He was Past Commander and Past STG of ARMS for the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 0194 of Florence and Past County Commander, Past Vice Commander and Past STG of ARMS. He was a Life Member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Mount Holly.

Ed was a member of the American Slovak Citizens Club, Roebling NJ, Mt Holly Moose Lodge No 737, the Hibernian Club Hamilton, the Bordentown Deer Club and the Bordentown Elks Lodge 2085, where he received ELK of the Year 1995-1996.

Son of the late John and Margaret Downs, he is predeceased by his loving wife, Viola Downs and his grandson, Andres Mendez, he is survived by his children, Alice M. Mendez and ( Phillip Friedman), Sherry Ann and (John) Slaight, Ed J Downs Jr. and (Dhana Arvello), Thomas C Downs, his grandchildren, Tanya (Gary) Donohue, Edward J. Downs III, Elana J. Downs, John Michael Slaight, Joseph B. Slaight, Timothy J. Slaight, Rebecca Slaight, his great grandchildren, Riley Marshall, Chloe Donohue, Jaxon Donohue, his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Davis


A Celebration of Edward’s life will be held on Thursday January 20, 2022 10:00 am at the Bordentown Home for Funerals 40 Crosswicks St. Bordentown. Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening 6:00 ~ 8:00 pm and Thursday morning from 9:00 am until the time of the Service. Burial will follow at Bordentown Cemetery.
